Gmail account: email@example.com
Google Duo number: 1-562-296-8888 (use when we set up our first appointment)
Home phone: 1-562-240-5692 (landline goes straight to voicemail–to avoid robo-calls)
(Do not contact me through the gmail account, unless my firstname.lastname@example.org is not working or riohondo.edu is down for repair. Canvas emails should go straight to my email@example.com, but do not depend on it–sometimes it works, sometimes it does not work.)
(Please do not call my landline, 1562-240-5692. I use it to call my students in case Google Duo is not working. I also use it to set up Google Duo on my computer, with a student, if we are having trouble connecting on Google Duo.)
YOU MUST USE HEADPHONES (WITH MICROPHONE)–NOT YOUR SPEAKER. OTHERWISE, YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO HEAR ME AND I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO HEAR YOU. HEADPHONES–WITH MICROPHONE–SEEM TO ELIMINATE FEEDBACK AND EXTERNAL NOISE. MY HEADPHONES/MICROPHONE COST ME ONLY $20–AND IT WORKS GREAT!
I use Google Duo. However, I will call you, first, when you are scheduled to talk with me. YOU MUST EMAIL ME YOUR PHONE NUMBER.
I MAY NOT CALL YOU UNTIL YOU MAKE AN APPOINTMENT THROUGH MY EMAIL, firstname.lastname@example.org . DO NOT RELY ON CANVAS.
Download Google Duo and create a gmail account. This process is simple and FREE. YOU MUST CREATE OR HAVE A GMAIL ACCOUNT.
Regarding Google Duo, I will send you an invite, and you must accept the invite. Then, I will call you through Google Duo when we schedule a time to talk via email. (You only have to download and accept the invite once, and then we can call each other during the semester on scheduled days THROUGH GOOGLE DUO.)
Please look at the SCHEDULE LINK for available times for us to talk; email me at email@example.com to schedule your time to talk with me about your assignments.
PLEASE LOOK AT THE SCHEDULE LINK ON THIS WEBSITE BEFORE YOU EMAIL ME A DAY AND TIME YOU WANT TO TALK. IF A STUDENT IS SCHEDULED AT A CERTAIN DAY AND TIME, THEN CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TIME.
The first several times we talk, the discussions will last between 1-to-2 hours, and sometimes 2-to-3 hours. So, when you email me a day and time to talk, and see a student is scheduled at the time you want to talk with me, you should make an appointment with this issue in mind.
You may be thinking/asking why I am not using Zoom. Google Duo is free. Zoom charges each school or college a lot of money–a lot of money! Google Docs is also free. Google Duo, Google Docs, and your Google gmail work well together. ( Did I mention FREE ! ) You will become familiar with this free process and you will see that it is very easy.
This past semester, Google Duo, Docs, and gmail worked great! My phone calls, through Google Duo, were very clear–as if we were standing next to each other! Then, when students needed to show me their speech outlines, Google Docs was easy for me to click on (through my firstname.lastname@example.org email). We can even change part of the outline, together, as we are looking at your specific Google DOCument. (Thanks Google!)
Also, my mic/earphones did not work with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Skype. If something works (i.e., Google Duo), then I am going to keep using it.
Most importantly, Google Duo works with any device. For example, if I have a Mac and you have Android, or if you have a PC, Google Duo will still connect us. This is different from Apple to Apple, which does not allow for Android or PC.
